3 Things To Know:
- Near-critical fire weather conditions are likely today.
- Severe thunderstorms are possible Sunday and Monday afternoon.
- Widespread rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is forecast from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday.
Fire Weather Concerns Today
Northwest Wisconsin is experiencing near-critical fire weather conditions today, particularly for areas south of U.S. Highway 2. Relative humidity is expected to drop to around 20 to 25 percent, and wind gusts could reach 20 to 25 mph. It is advisable to avoid any outdoor burning today.
Severe Thunderstorm Risk Sunday and Monday
As we move into Sunday, a low-pressure system will develop, bringing significant changes to our weather. Thunderstorms and heavy rain will move into the region from the southwest starting Sunday afternoon and lasting into Monday evening. The main risk for severe storms, including large hail and damaging winds, will occur on Monday, particularly in northwest Wisconsin. The NWS states:
“…most of the southern third of the CWA is likely to be under elevated instability with deep layer shear of 40kts or better, which may support severe storms capable of large hail and damaging winds.”
Impacts of Expected Rainfall
Widespread rain accumulations are expected to range between 1 to 3 inches, with localized amounts potentially reaching up to 4 inches. This heavy rainfall could lead to minor flooding, especially in areas still dealing with high water levels, such as the Boundary Waters. Additionally, strong northeast winds will develop, with gusts up to 40 knots expected on Lake Superior, creating hazardous conditions on the water.
Looking Ahead
After this weather system passes, cooler air will move into the region, with temperatures dipping into the 40s and 50s for much of next week. A chance for frost may also occur during the overnight hours on Wednesday and Thursday.
