This afternoon, the potential for isolated severe thunderstorms exists from the Brainerd Lakes area eastward across the Interstate 35 corridor and into northwest Wisconsin. According to the latest Area Forecast Discussion from the National Weather Service, these storms may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts of up to 60 mph and large hail around 1 inch in diameter.

“Isolated severe storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and large hail up to an inch in diameter.”

Thunderstorm activity is expected to continue through sunset, primarily south of the Iron Range. After that, skies will clear up, leading to the potential for fog to develop overnight. Marine fog may also reduce visibility to about 1 mile along the Lake Superior shoreline.

Fire Weather Conditions

On Saturday, a high-pressure system will bring sunny, dry weather. However, fire weather concerns are emerging for areas north of the Iron Range. Relative humidity levels may drop to between 25% and 30%, creating near-critical fire weather conditions. A Special Weather Statement may be issued for this area.

Sunday and Beyond

On Sunday, increasing southerly winds combined with very warm temperatures could create dangerous fire weather conditions. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for northern Itasca, Koochiching, and Northern St. Louis Counties in Minnesota, as the combination of low humidity and dry fuels makes for heightened fire risk. High temperatures are expected to reach the lower 90s.

Looking ahead to Monday, a shift in weather patterns could bring rain chances along with the potential for more severe weather in northern Minnesota. Following this, expect a prolonged heat wave to set in with temperatures possibly exceeding 90 degrees on several consecutive days, especially for areas away from Lake Superior.
