Air Quality Concerns Continue
Today in western Wisconsin, air quality remains a significant concern as wildfire smoke continues to blanket the region. Despite indications that smoke density may be lower than last week, air quality is expected to be unhealthy to very unhealthy, particularly in Wisconsin. Air Quality Alerts are in effect until Monday morning.
Monday’s Severe Weather Potential
As we transition to Monday, conditions are looking favorable for severe weather, particularly in the afternoon. A complex weather system is moving in from the west, which could lead to the development of strong storms. The potential hazards include:
– Large hail due to steep lapse rates
– Strong wind gusts with DCAPE values indicating strong downdrafts
– Heavy rainfall with localized flooding potential in areas experiencing multiple rounds of storms
Following the passage of the cold front, we may also see tornado potential, with model forecasts showing favorable conditions for tornado development. However, uncertainty remains regarding the timing and exact location of these storms. As noted in the Area Forecast Discussion, “confidence is fairly high that if storms develop, they will become severe.” If the developing storms move slower than expected and linger, it could inhibit further destabilization, complicating the forecast.
Cooler Weather Ahead
After Monday’s severe potential, we can expect a welcome change in the weather pattern. Cooler temperatures will settle over the region beginning Tuesday, with highs expected in the upper 70s to low 80s, providing a necessary relief from the recent heat. While mostly dry conditions are anticipated, there is a slight chance for showers or storms later in the week as weak disturbances move through.
