Ring in 2026 with a First Day Hike at Wisconsin state parks. Guided and self guided winter hikes are planned statewide on New Year’s Day, according to the DNR.
If the new year has you craving a reset that does not involve a gym membership or a screen, Wisconsin’s state parks are offering a simpler option, take a hike! The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is encouraging residents to welcome 2026 by getting outdoors with First Day Hikes on New Year’s Day at properties across the state.
From forested boardwalks in central Wisconsin to icy shoreline trails along Lake Michigan, the annual tradition is designed to make winter recreation approachable, social and fun for all experience levels.
“Kick off the new year with one of our fun and festive First Day Hikes,” said Steve Schmelzer, DNR Parks and Recreation Management Director. “There’s nothing like a refreshing winter hike or snowshoe adventure to rejuvenate the mind and body.”

Choose Your Style Of Winter Hike
Some locations will host guided hikes of 1 to 3 miles, led by property naturalists or local experts who know the terrain and the season. These hikes start at set times and are a great fit for beginners or anyone curious about winter hiking. A few guided hikes are pet free, so it is best to confirm details before bringing along a dog.
Prefer to explore on your own terms? Self guided options allow visitors to arrive anytime during the event window and select a trail that matches their comfort level. Park staff may be available with maps and suggestions to help point you in the right direction.
What To Wear And What To Expect
Winter conditions are part of the experience, so the DNR recommends dressing in warm layers with hats, gloves and insulated boots. Trails may be slick in spots, making hiking poles or traction devices a smart addition. Several parks will offer warming shelters or bonfires to give hikers a chance to thaw out and socialize.
Participation in First Day Hikes is free, though a state park vehicle admission pass or state trail pass may be required. For those without a pass, free daily admission passes are available at many local libraries.
More Than A Walk In The Woods
At some properties, First Day Hikes also include snowshoeing, cross country skiing, refreshments and other winter activities. Visitors interested in snowshoe rentals or reserving an outdoor wheelchair should contact the property in advance and ask about accessible trail conditions.
