NWS hosting storm spotter training across southern Wisconsin
Free NWS storm spotter training sessions return across southern Wisconsin from March through April. Here’s how to attend.
3 THINGS TO KNOW
- Free storm spotter training runs March 25 through April 29 across southern Wisconsin
- Sessions last about two hours and cover safety and severe weather reporting
- No registration needed for most events, with one exception in Jefferson County
The National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan is rolling out its 2026 storm spotter training program, offering free sessions across southern Wisconsin from late March through April. These two-hour classes are designed for both new and experienced spotters, focusing on safety and how to properly report severe weather.
Each session covers the same material, so attendees only need to participate once. Topics include identifying severe weather features, understanding reporting criteria and learning how real-time reports help improve warnings and public safety.
Most sessions are open with no pre-registration required — simply show up. The only exception is the April 9 session in Jefferson County, which requires advance registration. Additional online training opportunities are also expected to be announced for the broader Great Lakes region.
The training schedule includes multiple locations and times, including stops in Dodgeville, Racine, Janesville, West Bend and New Berlin, making it accessible for residents across the region.
For weather enthusiasts, emergency responders or anyone interested in severe weather safety, this is a great opportunity to get involved and make a difference during storm season.
